The G-Man (from Half-Life)

A drawing that incorporates charcol, conté crayon, and pastels, The G-Man was a final piece for a senior year Drawing and Illustration class. Rather than take on a more complex image, I chose a simpler subject and made it complex. This iconic character from the Half-Life series of video games already had an alien and otherworldly presence to him, so I played with crosshatching to give each component its own texture, even if those textures depart somewhat from a literal depiction: The jacket textured as tweed, the shirt as linnen, the tie as silk, his skin leathery, his hair almost resembling stiff quills, and some more chaotic crosshatching to destinguish the background. the entire work is monochromatic save for blue and green pastel coloring in his irises. The eyes are larger to help convey his offputting nature while the whites of his eyes are brightened by white conté to help convey his almost hypnotic gaze. Finally, the white outline around the g-man serves to diferentiate from the background and give him an otherworldly glow.
